Could you be mixing different line-end styles (e.g., editing
on both a unix system that uses LF at end-of-line and a Windows
system that uses CRLF or a Mac that uses CR only)?

This sounds like your configuration file is screwed up, again
possible due to editing across mixed operating systems which
may have left wrong end-of-line characters. What OS are you on?
If unix, can you examine the file with some editor that will
show you line-endings (e.g. vim -b) and let you see if that's the
problem.
