[PENNMUSH] News and Theme files

Just spent some serious time looking for info online followed by some
more serious time trying to (again) figure it out for myself. Am at
wit's end at this point. Help?
I'm running PennMUSH 1.8.1p4
I tried putting subordinate news files into the .nws subdirectory, and
every time news.txt remade the text in NEWS on the MUSH got scrambled.
I'd pull up NEWS <topic> and text would begin on the second line of
the first paragraph, in the middle of the second paragraph, or end
somewhere randomly within the text. I finally said naughty words and
put every single NEWS file in news.txt and hand-edited the & Entries
line. I now have NEWS files, but not the way they're supposed to
work.
On to Theme files. Well, I tried, but nothing I did would let me get
'theme' to return anything but 'Huh?' from in the MUSH. Yes, my
config.msh has been properly uncommented to allow theme files. And
events files.
So I tried Events. This exercise in futility began with the MUSH
apparently incapable of reading ~txt/evt/events.evt or
~/txt/events.evt but instead heading straight for
~/txt.evt/pennmush.evt which reads that it's TinyMUSH and there are no
files available.
I tried another make, nothing changed. I tried the same trick with
events.txt that I used with news.txt. Nothing changed. I tried
renaming pennmush.evt and got told "No entry for 'EVENTS'."
In short, nothing is working. Have I any recourse outside of entering
absolutely everything into news.txt?
I think I even crashed the MUSH running @readcache, but can't prove
that... Argh.
